Evening in the Crater bar. The air was thick with the smells of smoke, alcohol and the various odours of its multiracial clientele. Mei sat at her usual table with a glass of human whiskey in her hand, examining the clients as she did normally with a predatory gaze, an almost mischievous grin spread across her face. Her slender build was covered with tight fitting trousers, light grey on the front and dark on the back, a matching vest that was cut short just above the bellybutton, as well as a desert coloured jacket and scarf, black gloves that concealed a Von Bach Industries tattoo on one hand and an intricate rose tattoo on the other, and black, knee-high boots. Her long, black hair was loose, hanging over her shoulders and complimenting her other typically Asian features.

"Hey," came an unknown voice to her left. She turned her head to see an Echelon mercenary standing over her, looking as grumpy as they usually did.

"Hey yourself," Mei replied, eyeing the man up and down, "I'm not interested in whatever you have to say, hun," she preemptively answered, taking another sip from her whiskey and looking back over the rest of the clients.

"Mr. Soleptor demands an audience. He said I could drag you kicking and screaming if need be," the mercenary responded, cracking his knuckles. He was armed, and wearing full Echelon armour, though he was certainly many times more burly than Mei was. Her free hand slipped down her thigh, resting on her magnum as she glanced at the man again.

"Tell that fat Liberata ***** to go **** himself. I don't care about your boss's demands," Mei answered in a hostile tone. The mercenary simply looked to the side and nodded. Mei's eyes widened as she grabbed hold of her magnum and went to stand up, though a hard blow to the back of her head from another mercenary who stood behind her forced her to the ground. Everything went dark.

Nobody within the Crater bar seemed to care as the mercenaries dragged Mei's unconscious body into a darkened backroom; normal business in the Crater as usual. They sat her in a chair and tied her wrists to the side, before pouring a glass of cold water on her face, causing her to cough and splutter. She immediately went to stand up, but the two mercenaries kept her grounded.

"What the **** is this?" Mei exclaimed, looking around at the two mercenaries, as well as the figure that she recognised as Varus Soleptor on the other side of a table.

"Wait outside men, I'll call when I need you," Varus waved off the mercenaries who walked outside the room and closed the door. He dropped the volume of his voice as the door shut. Mei wasn't stupid enough to kick the crap out of the fat Liberata who had her dragged into a darkened backroom, now was not the time. "I hope my mercenaries weren't too rough, I wouldn't want you too damaged before we've even spoken," Varus uttered quietly.

"Yeah, whatever you fat ****," Mei shouted, an incredible amount of anger in her voice. She closed her eyes and breathed heavily, "just tell me why you wanted to speak with me. It's not everyday that the robber baron himself asks to speak with someone in private," she inquired, forcing herself to be calm. He may be a piece of **** Liberata with a piss poor attitude, but he's rich and I can make a tidy sum here, she thought to herself, still seething with rage.

"I have a job that needs doing and you're the person who's going to do it. See, I've done some research into mercs and Ark hunters in the area and I stumbled upon some interesting facts about you, Miss Zhang. You've done some pretty unacceptable things in your life that you've tried to bury; I'm sure your boss with the Ascension Union would be very interested to hear in some of the activity you have partaken in, as would our local lawkeeper," he sneered at her from the other side of the table.

"Yeah, what of it? You planning to ruin my life for no good reason?" Mei aggressively questioned back. She sighed, shaking her head, "just tell me the job and the pay. It's obvious that's what this is leading to."

"Yes, right. The job. The reason why I plucked you out was because the very nature of the job. It's not dangerous as such, but it's not exactly lawful," Varus explained.

"Right. What's to stop me from turning you in for this?" Mei asked, grinning at the Liberata.

"Simply that you'll never win. I have far more dirt on you than you have on me, more wealth, more power. You wouldn't be so stupid; I need a questionable job doing, and you need the scrip. It's a mutually beneficial business proposition," Varus said again with a frown, tiring of Mei's rebellious retorts. "I need you to burn down this shack. It's in Sausalito, on one of the farms and it's occupied by a former employee of mine and his wife. They ran off and joined the Raiders so I want them dead and their possessions destroyed." Mei shifted her weight slightly and raised an eyebrow.

"The pay?" she asked, a serious tone to her voice.

"You'll be rewarded handsome-..." Varus started.

"I need specifics, fatboy," Mei interjected with a frown.

"Eh... Eight thousand scrip, plus I won't turn you over to the lawkeepers," Varus casually answered, a smug grin on his face.

"Make it ten," she retorted with an assertive tone, her cold glare making eye contact for the first time with Varus, causing him to step backwards.

"Yes... I-... Ten thousand and I'll keep your secrets locked up, that sounds fair," he immediately said, a scared tone to his voice. Mei grinned.

"Why not ask the lawkeeper about this anyway? Sounds like their kind of affair," Mei asked, still glaring at Varus.

"Well, you see I'd get lost behind all their red-tape. I have no formal proof, see? But I saw the two of them speaking with the Raiders myself!" he exclaimed, though Mei raised a quizzical eyebrow at him again. "Eh... I mean... Well, one of my sources did. Why do you care? You're getting paid and your secrets are staying safe."

"Fine. Deal. Can't stand those ****ing Raiders anyway. I'll need my gun back though," Mei answered with a sigh, causing Varus to smile.

"Wonderful! Men, you can come back in now," Varus called to the mercenaries outdoors, the two of them filing in quickly. "Untie our guest and give her weapon back outside would you? I have other business that needs attending to," Varus instructed as he walked out of the room. The two mercenaries untied Mei from the chair and gave her magnum back to her.

"Yeah, real tough girl aren't you?" one mercenary sneered at her as he gave her magnum back. She grabbed it and holstered it forcefully, her face close to the mercenary's with the same cold glare.

"I swear that I will put a bullet through your skull, pretty-boy," Mei threatened before she turned to leave, storming out of the Crater bar to the runner that she was borrowing from the Ascension Union whilst she put her own one together at Top-Notch. She put on a pair of tinted goggles and turned the ignition, revving the engine loudly before maneuvering out onto the road and gunning down the road at high speed. Smiling, she let out a loud, pleased sigh as she sped down the road, the wind whipping through her hair and against her skin.

****, I love this.

The following morning, Mei pulled up to a small metal shack in the middle of some farmland. She frowned, it was the one she was looking for at least, though it seemed rather unassuming. She ensured that her magnum was firmly holstered on her thigh as she got off the runner and made her way to the side of the shack. There weren't any obvious ways in that she could see.

"****. I hate waiting like this," she muttered in Cantonese to herself, squatting down around the corner to the door. She didn't have to wait long before she heard the front door open. She pulled out her magnum and rounded the corner, grabbing the scruffy looking Caucasian man by the collar and shoving him back inside, pointing her magnum at him. His clothes were messy and ragged, his light brown hair matching his clothes in messiness and his brown eyes full of panic. A woman screamed from around the corner as she was her husband thrown down to the floor. Wonderful, they're both here, she thought to herself, a grin on her face as she glanced at the woman. She was rooted in place with fear, having a similar appearance to her husband, though her hair and skin were slightly darker than his.

"Why are you here in my house, pointing a gun at me? You with the Raiders?" the man asked aggressively. Mei seethed with rage at the comparison, taking a step forwards and kicking him hard in the face, causing his nose to start bleeding as he tumbled backwards again.

"Don't ****ing compare me to those low lives! You Raiders are all the same," she spits to the side, keeping her magnum trained on the man, "it makes me sick."

"What? We're not with the Raiders!" the man shouted, a look of shock on his face, though his expression soon shifted to one of grim realisation. "It's Varus, isn't it? Varus sent you didn't he? I fucking knew this would happen, its not what you think."

"Yeah? That's a ****ing terrible lie. Do you take me for an idiot!" she shouted back at him, planting her boot on the man's chest and pressing down hard, the barrel of her magnum almost touching the man's face.

"It's true," he managed, though his words were strained under the pressure of Mei's boot, "listen, please. I used to work for Varus, but I found some of his business dealings. Incriminating dealings. I took the papers and fled with my family, so he wants me dead. Please stranger, don't do this." Mei grinned, pressing the barrel of her magnum firmly against the man's forehead.

"What's it worth to you?" she uttered quietly, a look of utter apathy on her face. She honestly didn't care.

"I've got... I've got four thousand scrip. It's all I have, please," he begged, the desperation in his voice caused Mei's grin to widen. She laughed, loudly.

"Four thousand? Is that all? Really, I'd think that your family was worth more to you than that, you *******! What kind of a husband are you?" she chuckled, pointing her magnum at the man's wife momentarily, though she retrained the gun on the man soon after.

"You can't do this, these people are probably innocent!" came the voice of Mei's EGO implant, breaking her train of thought. She placed a hand to her ear, removing her foot from the man's chest and pacing back a little.

"Shut it. You know the drill by now, no one's innocent. I'm not getting locked up with the low-lives for these ****ers!" she screamed back, causing the man and his wife to look at her with slightly confused expressions.

"Wait, that's an EGO implant. You're one of Von Bach's Ark hunters? Why are you doing this? Please, come with us; if you help us bring Varus to justice, I'm sure we can get the lawkeepers to forgive whatever past misdeeds you've done," the man said calmly as he got to his feet, keeping his hands where Mei could see them in a non-threatening way, "come on. Come with us. All you need to do is put the gun down."

"Shut up!" Mei screamed, pointing the gun at the man again, "you see? Now they know more about me? Are you ****ing happy with yourself?" she seemed to scream at no-one, speaking to her EGO implant. "Don't you ****ing come near me!" she shouts at the man who seemed to be approaching her slowly, "don't ****ing test me! I will kill you if you don't step away."

"Look, I'm not here to hurt you. We can work together, and both come out better," the man said in his calm, friendly voice, still stepping towards her. Mei squeezed the trigger, her magnum making a loud gunshot noise.

The woman screamed incredibly loudly as her husband collapsed backwards, completely motionless once his body settled on the floor. There was a large, bloody hole in his chest where the high calibre shot had effortlessly punched straight through his body and a small red pool started to form around him. "I ****ing told him, but he didn't ****ing listen!" Mei shouted, glaring at the woman who seemed to be hiding something. Mei didn't care, it was too late to even think about doing things differently now. She raised her magnum and closed on the woman, who by this point was trying to speak, but fear had her blubbering incoherently as Mei closed in. Mei placed her magnum to the woman's head and fired, the bullet utterly annihilating the woman's skull, showering bits of bone and brain backwards against the far wall. Her now almost headless body just dropped to the floor, causing Mei's eyes to widen in shock when she noticed what the woman was trying to hide. A small girl, no older than eight years old, stood behind her mother's body, her face spattered with her mother's blood.

Mei stepped away, her hands running through her hair as she paced backwards and forwards. "He said nothing about a kid. A ****ing kid! I'm not being paid enough for this. If I had known..." she started rambling to herself in Cantonese, finally looking at the child who was silent, stricken with the despair of seeing her parents murdered in front of her. Mei walked towards the child and pointed her gun at the girl's head. I've ****ing done this before. I've ****ing done this before. This is no different to the case out in the badlands, she told herself, keeping the magnum pointed at the girl's head, her finger firmly on the trigger. The girl looked up at Mei, along the barrel of the magnum, her eyes full of a feeling that Mei understood all too well. Utter despair. The whole situation was far too familiar to her, bringing up her own memories. She tried to squeeze the trigger, she tried to just end it and be done with it. She couldn't do it.

"****!" she exclaimed, holstering the pistol and crouching down, grabbing the girl by her clothes. "You listen to me and you listen good, yeah? Live an honest life, don't let yourself be forced into this kind of ****ing situation ever again. Don't take **** from anyone and grow up to be a ****ing independent woman, you understand?" Mei said quietly, yet a little aggressively. The girl didn't understand, causing Mei to shake her in frustration. "I said do you ****ing understand! Answer me you little ****!" she screamed before shoving the girl backwards, causing her to land with a soft bump on her backside. Mei wiped her eyes as tears started to form, running down her face and causing her eyeliner to run. She grabbed the child by the arm and dragged her out the shack, throwing her on the ground before she went back inside, finding a metal can of petrol and a small tank of gas. She poured the petrol around the house, positioning the gas can near the front door. Once she had finished, she stepped outside, dragging the girl to a safe distance before she fired on the gas can, the shack igniting almost instantaneously, burning away like an inferno. She looked at the child again. "Don't even think about going near that fire. It'll burn you alive," she said sternly before getting back on her runner, putting her tinted goggles on and revving the engine. "When you're older, if you want to settle this like the strong woman you will be, get in the ****ing queue," she said, putting particular emphasis on the word 'will', before driving as fast as she could away from the scene, tears still streaking her face. Lawkeepers and do-gooders would be all over the scene soon and she had money to collect from a certain fat Liberata.

She arrived back at the Crater bar, finding it relatively empty other than Varus and a single Echelon bodyguard. She stormed past the bodyguard and up to Varus, incredibly angry."You lied to me, you son of a bitch!" she shouted at the Liberata.

"Hey, don't approach Mr. Soleptor like that!" the mercenary said, grabbing Mei's shoulder and tugging her backwards. Mei instantly turned, grabbing the mercenaries arm and flipping him onto his back, following up with a powerful stomp to his head. It wouldn't kill him, but it certainly knocked him unconscious. She turned back to Varus, her eyes aflame with rage.

"Fifteen thousand, now!" she yelled, grabbing Varus's collar, "and next time, ****ing tell me all the details before sending me out!" she continued, tightening her grip on his jacket.

"Alright, alright... Fifteen thousand..." he agreed with resignation and fear thick in his voice. His bodyguard had just been floored in front of his very eyes and a very angry and very dangerous woman with no qualms about breaking the law was holding his jacket. Mei let go, pushing him back into his chair and holding her hand out expectantly. Varus grabbed a pair of cases from behind him, opening them and transferring some of the scrip into the other, before shutting them and handing Mei the case that had received the extra scrip. "I'm taking it out of his paycheck!" Varus exclaimed, pointing at the unconscious bodyguard. Mei grinned and took the case.

"You should hire some real security. Echelon mercenaries leave... A lot to be desired, trust me," she said with a smile. "Pleasure doing business with you," she said before turning and walking off, out of the Crater bar and back to her runner that she had parked just outside. She put her tinted goggles back on and revved the engine, driving off down the road.

"I should swing by Top-Notch; check to see if the problems with the fuel injectors was the problem," she mused as she drove down the road, scrip case securely fastened to the back of her runner. One of her better paydays, but she found herself wondering if the little girl was alright. At any rate, it was no longer her problem in her mind. She shrugged, and continued driving.
