The beginnings of the Ascension Union (ASCU) sponsored mercenary outfit are not comprehensively recorded but the earliest available records indicate that the foundations of this mercenary group were lain ~2037-2038, coinciding roughly with the founding of Defiance. The identified leader/founder of the unit and its co-founder [note-1: intel posits this individual as unit second-in-command; un-verified] met during the founding of Defiance and the human-votan tensions that followed in the following year [note-2: specific date unknown]. Anecdotal data describes that in a particularly high-casualty clash between human and votan forces these two individuals "saved each other’s lives" and subsequently banded together on their own recognizance. Following this event the pair went on to take jobs for various characters of questionable motivation and legality, while earning a budding reputation as frequenters of the most low-value entertainments the city had to offer [note-3: research possible inter-personal relationships and work-history legality for asset leverage; pending].

The situation in Defiance, as it was in the late 2030/early 2040 period, was known to be quite dangerous for operators in the so-called "underworld," possessing an inefficiently high turnover & mortality rate [note-4: the "underworld" was and still is largely under castatihan control; see report on castatihan activities for details]. The two ASCU primaries ran into numerous minor and major issues with not only the nominal ruling elements of the "underworld" but also attracted the attentions of the lawmakers. Possibly to avoid these tensions during the summer of 2042 the ASCU was registered as an independent mercenary organization, citing no permanent affiliations at inception, after which they gathered a sizable amount of mercenaries under their banner and left Defiance to work in the area known as the Storm Divide.

Apart from the occasional second-hand reported run-ins with bandits, and a few possible ident-matches in lawkeeper records, we have no further information about ASCU operations with one exception. In 2043 they recieved contract to eliminate a group of bandits roughly local to the Kansas Mines. These bandits had been successfully abusing the few settlements in the area at will, without censure [note-5: records bnd-10112-KM-01 through bnd-10112-KM-17; verified]. The ASCU was successful in executing this contract but sustained a high casualty rate, with attendantly high mortality rate, cutting their operating efficiency by a large margin. They rescued a number of captured personnel from the defunct bandits, of which most returned to their families/occupations, but it seems that at least one of these remained with the ASCU when they returned to Defiance in late 2045 [note-6: ASCU personnel identification incomplete; data search incomplete; pending].
The remaining members of the ASCU volunteered for fitting with the EGO system and various other VBI prototypes [note-7: augment session ASCU-901x-45tp] and left Defiance very recently to join the growing numbers of Ark Hunters flooding the Bay Area. All attempts to track their exact movements have been unsuccessful against the background data-noise generated in that area. Current intel does suggest that they have bolstered their ranks with new Ark Hunters since their deployment to the Bay Area [note-8: equipment/augment requests, supplementary, ASCU-904x-19dy].

While the ASCU seems to be working primarily under VBI sponsorship at the present time, given their known history, it is likely that this work arrangement is not exclusive. After all they are mercenaries, a type of asset that can only be trusted to work for their own best advantage and towards whatever inscrutable goals such transient groups beyond simple survival they might possess. Future handlers are warned to treat all dealings with the ASCU as high-risk and maintain a no-liability status for VBI.
